If parents paid attention to the misinformation put out by the medical community, they would believe that having a VBAC birth is a rare occurrence, and dangerous to attempt. But we know better.
We support many parents who prefer a vaginal birth over an unnecessary repeat Cesarean. With some exceptions, women’s bodies are equipped to give birth to children vaginally. It is a tremendous benefit that in emergency cases, Cesarean sections can be done, possibly saving the life of the baby, mother or both. But too often these surgeries are not an emergency and simply done for convenience. Some parents are pressured into having C-sections with subsequent pregnancies unnecessarily.
We train doulas everywhere how to become expert VBAC doulas, and how to promote VBAC births to interested women who are pregnant or trying to conceive. Most parents are thrilled when they have a VBAC birth, and we encourage them to talk to their friends and relatives about their experience so that more parents are able to experience the joy of a VBAC delivery.
